Tips for Encouraging Creativity in Your Child

Creativity is a crucial skill that all parents want their children to have. But how do you go about fostering creativity in children? Do you just sit back and let them do their own thing?

The best way to encourage creativity in your child is to create an environment where creativity can flourish! And rather than sitting on the sidelines, playing an active role in your child’s adventures can be beneficial. To help your little one’s imagination grow, here are five tips for encouraging creativity in your child.

Provide Materials

Providing your child with various materials gives them the freedom to try different things. Stock their room with plenty of art supplies. Crayons, markers, paint, craft paper…you can even install a chalkboard. Art isn’t the only creative endeavor your child can pursue, though! They may prefer to get active outside, in which case we recommend picking up some balls, jump ropes, and other play equipment.

A Creative Environment

We feel more inspired when our surroundings are inspiring. Consider decorating your child’s bedroom or playroom in a way that encourages creativity. Use bold colors instead of neutral and use removable patterned wallpaper to add interest and texture. Intersperse art, fun trinkets, and toys throughout the room, and you have a space that’s brimming with imagination!

Encourage Play

One of the most effective ways to encourage creativity is to encourage play. It’s hard to be creative when you’re stuck inside all day doing the same old same old, after all. Set aside some time each week to visit a new place or to try a new activity as a family.

Be Supportive

There’s nothing that quashes creativity as quickly as criticism—especially from someone you look up to! Even if your child has unconventional interests that you don’t fully understand, support them to the best of your ability.

And if your child makes a mistake when learning a new skill, don’t make them feel down. Instead, turn it into a lesson on how mistakes are necessary for growth and that the process matters more than results.

Be Inquisitive and Insightful

When your child is playing and being creative, don’t be afraid to ask questions and even offer your own insight. Questions like, “Oh, I like that! How did you come up with that idea?” or “What are you doing? Can you tell me more?” are invitations for your child to talk about what they’re doing and reflect on the creation process.

It can also be beneficial to offer up your own reflections during playtime. If your child is drawing, you might say something like, “Are you drawing a cloud? This shape here looks so white and fluffy!” Or, if your child is running outside in the rain, say, “Do you like to jump in the puddles because of the big splash they make? That’s my favorite part of playing in the rain!” This helps them consider another person’s perspective. It also encourages them to consider their own perspectives and share them.
